I have bought a neat wordpress plugin that mimics the “hidden” content feature of a Facebook page. That is to say, you have to “like” in order for something to appear.
Like this post. If you “like” this post, then a sentence magically appears below:

<fb:like href="http://www.bluebutterfly.ca/index.php/archive/facebook-like-and-wordpress/" layout="standard" show-faces="false" width="450"></fb:like>

This is a test of a wordpress plugin. If you can see this text, that means you have successfully "liked" me on Facebook.

I am starting to think there is an inverse correlation between having success on the internet and the look of your professional website. Or to clarify: the busier you get with work from your clients, the less attention you pay to your own website.
Now I have managed to update the wordpress version to 3.12 and I have picked out a fresh new theme. And I am writing new content, like right now.
But that’s about it.
I was hoping to take time out to design and print some new business cards, but that’s not going to happen.

The big, big ongoing project is of course the Oil and Gas Investments bulletin which I started in September and doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all.
Lastly, for a family friend, I’m helping her out with a website called Birth Rocks. Looks quite nice if I do say so myself.

Note: Don’t get tricky and open up a whole new bunch of Facebook accounts to claim the $100 multiple times. The Facebook team has various magical items in their wizard’s chest that will allow them to discern who is frauding them. And the banhammer will them descend.

I pretty well have this conversation with every client who wants me to build a website or revamp their current website or do some sort of internet marking campaign. The conversation goes something like this:

“Well, we can drive traffic to your site through Google Adwords and then after a while, working on adding content to your site and boost your natural rankings.” – Me

“I get traffic for free? Why can’t we work on me getting traffic for free? ” Customer.

Now, on the surface, this is a very reasonable question. Paid traffic is here today, gone tomorrow. Effort spent on organic SEO or, building up your website to attract more traffic, seems more like an investment. You paid somebody to boost rankings in your site, and you get that boost everyday, for free, for a long time afterwards.

But this thinking is also wrong, because you don’t really want traffic. Trust me on traffic. Hey, if you really want traffic, then I can help you, because I can send you tons of traffic, super cheap traffic from China. I can give you thousands of visitors of day to your website.

But you don’t want that. What you really want is sales. And for sales to happen, you need traffic that converts in to sales. And for you to get good converting traffic, you need to know which keywords bring in traffic that converts.

Now, the problem with organic is that it can take some time to rank for keywords. Weeks, even months. So you eventually rank for the keywords that you picked and start getting some traffic. But what if you picked the wrong keywords? I mean, you get traffic, you even get engaged traffic that stays on your site for awhile, but it doesn’t lead to customers that buy stuff? What do you do now?

That’s why most internet marketers push the paid ad campaign at the start. A small campaign can easily target hundreds or even thousands of keywords and in less than a month, you can get an idea which keywords convert into sales. Oftentimes, it’s surprising which keywords actually make the customer pull out their credit card.

And after that, then you can spend some time (and money, oh yes it takes some money) to build towards ranking naturally for that keyword.

So we spilled some water on our 2WIRE router at home the other day and we lost our broadband connection. Oh man, what a big bag of suck it is, losing your home internet. So I phoned up Telus and went through the necessary steps with 1st level support, did you turn it on and off, yadda, yadda.

After they were satisfied that yes indeed, it was busted, they booked a technician to come over the next afternoon. Well, the guy showed up the next morning with a new 2WIRE gateway and we got our cabled internet connection back in about 5 minutes.

Then I had a problem with my very old wireless card not working with WEP encryption so ANOTHER Telus guy popped by with a courtesy USB 2WIRE wireless card and I got my desktop up again with wireless.

Now, I’ve had a very bad experience working with Shaw so it was very nice working with good experience people at Telus. So thank to Darren Entwhistle for not screwing up the organization, and I mean that sincerely. I really hope Telus can keep its good experienced people going forward in these tough times and not gut the organization for the sake of shaving a few dollars in cost for better reporting in the next quarter.

P>S. And I’m now officially loyal to you guys.

Lots of people who have a WordPress blog want to charge for their content, so they need to be to restrict membership. I am currently developing a WordPress site for a client who needs precisely that type of feature. There are actually very few plug-ins on the market who can do a satisfactory job of it, and most of them cost money. Well, except for one.

Memberwing.com has a wordpress membership plugin that is free, if you are willing to part with your email address. It offers four levels of membership, with SEO potential in allowing snippets of posts to be indexed by Google.

Enjoy.
