Okay, it’s been more than year since I updated the website. And the way things are going, another year might pass as wellI just finished off (mostly) a major web rebuild over at Energy Editor.
The big, big ongoing project is of course the Oil and Gas Investments bulletin which I started in September and doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all.
Lastly, for a family friend, I’m helping her out with a website called Birth Rocks. Looks quite nice if I do say so myself.

Note: Don’t get tricky and open up a whole new bunch of Facebook accounts to claim the $100 multiple times. The Facebook team has various magical items in their wizard’s chest that will allow them to discern who is frauding them. And the banhammer will them descend.

I pretty well have this conversation with every client who wants me to build a website or revamp their current website or do some sort of internet marking campaign. The conversation goes something like this:
“Well, we can drive traffic to your site through Google Adwords and then after a while, working on adding content to your site and boost your natural rankings.” – Me
“I get traffic for free? Why can’t we work on me getting traffic for free? ” Customer.
Now, on the surface, this is a very reasonable question. Paid traffic is here today, gone tomorrow. Effort spent on organic SEO or, building up your website to attract more traffic, seems more like an investment. You paid somebody to boost rankings in your site, and you get that boost everyday, for free, for a long time afterwards.
But this thinking is also wrong, because you don’t really want traffic. Trust me on traffic. Hey, if you really want traffic, then I can help you, because I can send you tons of traffic, super cheap traffic from China. I can give you thousands of visitors of day to your website.
But you don’t want that. What you really want is sales. And for sales to happen, you need traffic that converts in to sales. And for you to get good converting traffic, you need to know which keywords bring in traffic that converts.
Now, the problem with organic is that it can take some time to rank for keywords. Weeks, even months. So you eventually rank for the keywords that you picked and start getting some traffic. But what if you picked the wrong keywords? I mean, you get traffic, you even get engaged traffic that stays on your site for awhile, but it doesn’t lead to customers that buy stuff? What do you do now?
That’s why most internet marketers push the paid ad campaign at the start. A small campaign can easily target hundreds or even thousands of keywords and in less than a month, you can get an idea which keywords convert into sales. Oftentimes, it’s surprising which keywords actually make the customer pull out their credit card.
And after that, then you can spend some time (and money, oh yes it takes some money) to build towards ranking naturally for that keyword.

Getting A+ certification is useful if you are entry-level in IT, but I don’t know of too many companies in Vancouver that ask for A+ certification up front. One area where getting this certification might be useful is if you are interested in getting into retail IT.
And don’t laugh, in my opinion, the money in IT is in sales and goes to people who have good communication skills. You could do a lot worse than a retail job when starting out in IT. Anyways, here’s the article:
“If you are an individual interested in the
information technology or IT field, one of your requirements is to stay
up to date with the ever-changing world of information technology. The
way to do that is through education. Computer training courses keep an
IT professional up to date and current on his or her specialty.
Are
you entering the world of information technology as a service
technician? One of your first courses will be an A+ computer
certification course. This is a course that will take your current
entry-level knowledge as someone who is preparing to enter the world of
IT and build on it. You should already have basic computer user skills
for a course in A+ computer certification. This is a course for those
who have a serious interest in the IT field.
An A+ computer
certification course will focus on skills and concepts of computer
software and hardware. You will learn how to install, upgrade, repair,
configure, troubleshoot, optimize and perform preventative maintenance
on computer hardware and operating systems. Computer training courses
vary in their lengths. The A+ course is five days in length.
This
is training that will get you set for IT departments in corporate
settings, or places where you have little dealing with clients but are
working mainly with computer hardware. Once you complete this course,
you will be prepared to take the CompTIA A+ Certification. You can sign
up as an individual with computer courses. However, in many cases your
place of employment will include computer training as part of their
training budget.
For
a course in A+ computer certification, look to LearniT.com. They are a
trusted learning partner in the world of corporation information
technology, business management and project management raining. You can
count on excellent and consistent training and competitive prices.

So we spilled some water on our 2WIRE router at home the other day and we lost our broadband connection. Oh man, what a big bag of suck it is, losing your home internet. So I phoned up Telus and went through the necessary steps with 1st level support, did you turn it on and off, yadda, yadda.
After they were satisfied that yes indeed, it was busted, they booked a technician to come over the next afternoon. Well, the guy showed up the next morning with a new 2WIRE gateway and we got our cabled internet connection back in about 5 minutes.
Then I had a problem with my very old wireless card not working with WEP encryption so ANOTHER Telus guy popped by with a courtesy USB 2WIRE wireless card and I got my desktop up again with wireless.
Now, I’ve had a very bad experience working with Shaw so it was very nice working with good experience people at Telus. So thank to Darren Entwhistle for not screwing up the organization, and I mean that sincerely. I really hope Telus can keep its good experienced people going forward in these tough times and not gut the organization for the sake of shaving a few dollars in cost for better reporting in the next quarter.
P>S. And I’m now officially loyal to you guys.

Okay, by far the best game I have found is the Wii Rockband. You can with up to three of your buddies so it’s a great to have around if you are having a Vancouver Canuck party and they happen to get blown out in the first period. Which doesn’t seem to be happening very often this season, knock on wood.
If you don’t have a Wii, don’t worry, there seems to be a lot of Wii consoles around this Christmas.

Lots of people who have a Wordpress blog want to charge for their content, so they need to be to restrict membership. I am currently developing a Wordpress site for a client who needs precisely that type of feature. There are actually very few plug-ins on the market who can do a satisfactory job of it, and most of them cost money. Well, except for one.
Memberwing.com has a wordpress membership plugin that is free, if you are willing to part with your email address. It offers four levels of membership, with SEO potential in allowing snippets of posts to be indexed by Google.
Enjoy.

It’s just like an assembly line…
Canon Rebel Cameras
Update July 4th. Well I built a bunch of ecommerce sites using the .info domains and Google refused to index them. Seems like Google is just choking on the 99 cents .info domains, too many of them are spam. Oh well, time to drag out the wallet and upgrade to the $7 .net or .coms. No big whoop.
